How did you find this internship?

My first interaction with Zoetis was meeting Dustin DeVries, the Global Director for Talent Acquisition. I met Dustin around the middle of COVID-19 at an online conference with MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences) which Zoetis supports. I was unfamiliar with Zoetis, so Dustin took the time to talk about the company and what they do as well as get to know my interests in animal health. I stayed connected with Dustin for about a year and a half and talked about the possibility of interning at Zoetis. Ultimately, with Dustin’s help, he was able to guide me in the right direction.

How has your time at school prepared you for your internship at Zoetis?

In my classes, we participate in labs and learn a lot about the animal health industry. Animal science is a very hands-on major so being able to see and work with many different types of animals, the science side of animals, the physiology, and the health and management of the animals, has given me the chance to take what I’ve learned in the classroom and apply it to my internship at Zoetis. Zoetis has also given me the opportunity to look at the animal health industry from a different angle, learning more about the business side and how our products are produced.

What project are you most proud of?

Me, along with the other VMRD interns, worked on a project where we each evaluated the early stages of developing a vaccine. I think the coolest part about working on this was being able to start it the first few days of my internship. Being able to see my work and data from the beginning of my internship to the end of my internship has been a great showcase to how much I’ve learned throughout my time here at Zoetis.

What is something you have learned since starting your internship at Zoetis?

I've learned a lot about the importance of research and knowing what products you're both making and selling. The research at an industry level differs from research at an academic level. With academics, research is more of just discovery but in the animal health industry, it feels that research has more of a purpose and an end goal.
