Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22^nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. At Zoetis, we are committed to advancing sustainability in animal health for a better future by making a positive impact in our communities, innovating in animal health and protecting our planet. In 2021, Zoetis launched Driven to Care – our long-term sustainability initiative that brings to life our commitments to Communities, Animals, and the Planet. In honor of Earth Day, learn about our journey to carbon neutrality, and how we continue to bring our sustainability commitments to life.

Progress in our journey to carbon neutrality

We have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations and managing our climate risks because it matters to the communities we serve, our colleagues, our customers, the health of animals and those who care for them around the world. We are striving to achieve carbon neutrality in our own operations by 2030 – including a commitment to use 100% renewable electricity in our operations.   

In 2022, we conducted energy and carbon assessments at our top 10 sites, accounting for 88% of our total carbon footprint. This assessment enabled us to pinpoint over 100 energy efficiency projects. Starting in 2023, we initiated efforts to optimize utility operations and minimize excess energy consumption. Looking ahead, we will continue to expand our climate reporting and realize carbon reductions through projects outlined in our carbon-neutral roadmap while also identifying new projects.  

Sourcing renewable energy

Among our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in our own operations by 2030, we recently entered into a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Scout Clean Energy for 50 MW of power from their Heart of Texas wind farm, which is projected to supply up to 65% of our annual U.S. electricity needs starting in the first half of 2024. We anticipate that this agreement, along with the Vesper VPPA that is due to come online in 2025, will result in securing almost all of our U.S. electricity needs from renewable sources.
